Whitherville episode 3 - Do we have a suspect?

A doll story in 17 episodes.

Main characters overview: click here.

Sunday, March 3, 11h00

Daryl Collins, janitor at Whitherville High, has a meeting with Melanie Paige in her art gallery.

Melanie: "Your paintings are extremely good Daryl! Interesting, thought-provoking, technically flawless... the only thing I'm sorry about is that you didn't show them to me earlier! Now where do we go from here... I'll come to your place to make a selection for an exposition, we set a date for the opening and I'll take care of the invitations."

Melanie notices an uneasy look on Daryl's face and continues: "What's wrong? Don't you agree on something?"

Daryl: "That's not it, I'm thrilled... but... I live in a trailer, only temporarily of course, but it's not exactly a place to welcome guests in..."

Melanie: "Oh Daryl, please don't worry about that! I understand how you feel, but really, come on, it's me!" She smiles and says: "... I'll bring homemade cake..."

Melanie's smile makes Daryl's heart flutter. He says as cool as possible: "Now I'm tempted! Okay, we'll meet in the trailer, I'll make sure the coffee's ready!"

Melanie: "Very well, that's settled then. Oh, and if you have drawings or sketches, I'd like to see those too."

The glass front door opens.

Detective Nat McGovern: "Good morning mrs. Paige, mr. Collins. Daryl, I have some questions for you. Can you accompany me to the police station please?"

Daryl: "You sound so official Nat! Is this about the theft at the LaSalles?"

Nat: "I'll tell you more at the station. Let's go."

Melanie, who has a worried look on her face, touches Daryl's arm and says: "Hey, see you soon, okay?"

14h30, at the police station, interrogation room one

Daryl's fingerprints were taken earlier, his phone is examined and now he's drinking a cup of coffee while detective McGovern interrogates him.

Nat: "So, Daryl, can you tell me where you were Friday night between nine p.m. and eight a.m.?"

Daryl: "I was at home, alone, sleeping. I've had a very busy week at work and was exhausted. That's not much for an alibi is it... I know."

Nat: "And yesterday? Say, between six and nine p.m.?"

Daryl: "Why? Has there been another break-in? I was at the Peanut Bar, eating and having a couple of beers. Plenty of witnesses, ask Daniel and Oliver, they were both working! Look, I didn't do anything wrong, not on Friday and not yesterday."

Nat: "We're interrogating a lot of people Daryl. It's nothing personal, but we need to do this. Now, tell me, what do you know about 1920s art, in particular paintings?"

Daryl: "I know about the Grippengrouser if that's what you're referring to Nat. I've hung it on the LaSalle's wall myself for crying out loud! Years ago! Seriously, you know me, we went to high school together. We were friends! I'm not a thief, never was. Yes, I've had bad luck, lost everything, but I'm trying to get my life back on the rails by working hard, not by crime..."

Nat, her voice soft and compassionate: "I know what you've been through, and for the record, I still consider you a friend Daryl. But I have to ask these questions. It's my job. And the other reason you're here is because a forger painted a copy. The burglar replaced the original with it. We're now completely sure it wasn't you, we found fingerprints on the forgery and they don't match yours. We examined the copy, it's painted on an old canvas, but the paints are new. That's how I saw it wasn't the real painting, too fresh looking. The restoration course I took last year finally has proved its use!"

Nat sips her water bottle and continues: "So, do you know anyone who could make such a forgery? We don't know if it's a local, but we assume it is."

Daryl, smiling: "Tia and Eve didn't see it, but you did? Good on you McGovern! You always had an eye for detail! Well, to answer your question, there's a guy in the trailer park who could be your man. But I don't think he's a thief or opportunist. He doesn't care a lot about money or possession, he's a hippie at heart. He's an artist, but restores old art work to put bread on the table, so he has the materials. If he made the copy, I'm sure someone tricked him into doing it. His name is Wayne. I don't know his last name, but I can show you where he lives."

Nat: "Very well, let's hope this leads to something! And Daryl, about the copy, that's confidential information. The press doesn't know about it and we would like to keep it that way for now. You can go now. Sorry it took so long."

Daryl: "So, I'm not a suspect any longer?"

Nat: "Well, you don't have an alibi for Friday, but I'm inclined to believe you."

14h30, interrogation room two

At the same time Lilly Sapphire, personal assistant of the LaSalle sisters, is being interrogated by detective Marc Van Steen.

Van Steen: "It's unfortunate you don't have an alibi miss Sapphire. Summarized, you were alone in the guesthouse all night. Nobody can confirm that. You heard a car or a van, but you're not sure about the time."

Lilly: "It could have been a delivery, I don't know. It happens. I didn't leave my home and I definitely didn't use my key to let burglars into the apartment! Can I go now please?"

Van Steen: "Yes miss Sapphire, you can go. Stay in the neighborhood though, in case we have more questions for you."

Lilly: "Fine. It's not that I can go anywhere anyway!"

Marc thinks: what on earth does she mean by that... but he doesn't go into it and lets Lilly go.

To be continued...

  5. Only 17 episodes? I thought it would be longer. :) I'm really curious about the rest of the story. And Daryl seems a good-hearted guy, though not very bright. Great photos, as always.

  6. two new characters, daryl and melanie! and they both are painters. the plot is getting more and more interesting. daryl sounded honest when he was interrogated, but who knows. as for melanie, she might have something to do with the whole affair, time will tell. she looks like beyoncé, by the way. :)
    hugs!

Originally this Barbie doll had curly hair, but I straightened it and I see the resemblance too! Her smile is very similar :-). Hugs back, and enjoy the weekend!

  8. Does Melanie have a thing for Daryl? And poor Marc looked like he was rolling his eyes during his entire interview with Lilly.

  9. Hmm, okay, I am wondering why Daryl got so defensive so fast if he really had nothing to hide and the Sapphire lady, she is pretty vague about everything so ... could they both be working together? I mean Daryl is an artist so he is most likely more than capable of forgery. And the hippie guy at the trailer park could be a red herring he threw in to divert attention from himself. I kind of think Nat is too quick to dismiss him because of their friendship. Maybe too close to the suspect in this case.

Thanks for the link. I will add it to my reader feed.
