Saturday, Barbie Day

Saturday afternoon, after I had picked up two second hand Barbie play sets at a seller's home, I went to a thrift store nearby. I didn't expect to find much, but that turned out to be a mistake... This store had an amazing amount of used Barbie dolls for sale. I've honestly never seen such an assortment of Barbies in a thrift store before in my life! It took me quite some time to inspect them one by one but I found some really great dolls :-).

I spent a few hours on internet to identify the ones I didn't know. It made me realize once more that even after many years of doll collecting, I still know only a fraction of the incredibly wide Barbie and friends range... But, I managed to identify them all.

Here's what I took home with me. The ladies all still need to be washed and styled of course, they will look a lot better after their spa visit :-).

First of all: finally I have 2003 grandma from Happy Family! She was on my wish list for a long time. Grandma wears one original garment, her cardigan. Like all the other dolls she was dressed in randomly chosen clothes (by the store assistants I guess).

Next are two Generation Girls from 1998, Nichelle and Chelsie. Nichelle's afro hair-do is just fabulous, or at least it will be after it's re-styled. She has the same face mold as Made To Move yellow top Barbie (I named her Billie), so if it's possible I might try a head transplant. Billie's right eye is much bigger than the other, and that bothers me.

Then we have Dana from Barbie and the Rockers, 1986, with Real Dancing Action. She moves her arms up and down when her waist is turned. Her make-up is faded but I don't mind that. Her knees don't click anymore unfortunately.

Next are Earring Magic Midge from 1993, 1990 All American Kira and Hannah Montana.

Hannah's face looks as if she fell in a chimney, she'll need some extra scrubbing!
Cali Girl Horseback Riding (2004) is next. She misses her top, bag, belt and horse necessities, but she has her cowboy hat, jacket and boots. This girl has large and broad feet! I wonder why that is.

Cali Girl's feet next to regular Barbie feet.
Heart Family mom is the oldest of the bunch. She's from 1984. I like her sweet face.

And I found a more recent doll too: Barbie Style Raquelle from 2014 who originally wore an outfit with a red vest.

The last one is My Scene Masquerade Madness Westley (Madison in the U.S.A.).

The play sets that I picked up first are Picnic Set and Piano Concert, both from 1989 I think.

Finding the dolls was just a coincidence, but I bought the play sets for some pieces that I want to use in a living room diorama that is still under construction.

And this was how I spent my Saturday afternoon and evening, with Barbie and her friends :-).

    1. Hello Kamelia, yes, I'm very happy with what I found :-). Cali Girl is so pretty, and I love her outfit! Kira is also lovely. It was a very good day yesterday :-). I was like a child in a toy store hahaha! The diorama will take a while to be finished, but it's a very fun thing to make!

  2. Wow, so many dolls! That would be a lot to wash, dress up and style. :)
Midge is my favourite. And the piano looks awesome. In that case Billie could be Billie Holiday and give a concert if Ken agreed to accompany her.

    1. Hello Nana, it will take a lot of time to clean them all up! Especially the hair-dos will be a challenge :-). Midge is great, her hair is amazing and still soft after so many years!
I'm very happy with the piano! A concert would be great, and Billie could wear a retro Billie Holiday-ish gown and a flower in her hair :-).

    1. Hello Balbinka, thanks :-). I had fun, also with the identifying! They wore clothes too, but I think it's impossible to try to identify those. There are some nice pieces though.
The diorama is a good learning experience, it's the first time I try to make a dio with walls and all :-).

Those are some great finds. Those are really lovely dolls and I look forward to seeing them transformed by your magic hands, but I must say the piano set is my favorite.

    1. Hello Giac, a (much needed) spa day will be organized soon :-)! The piano set is great, I thought the Barbie logo was painted on the piano, but it turns out it's just a sticker. For my diorama it needs to be removed so that is going to be easier than I thought :-). Hugs back!

  10. It's wonderful to be able to find such rarities!
Grandma came to me when I stopped
Look everywhere for her, so I guess
I will have to apply a technique like this
indifference to dolls - to Heart Familly,
whose face has long ago won me :)

  12. I think I am really far behind on my reading list because I'm just seeing this. I too am really amazed how many Barbies there are. We tend to think of one or two Barbie types but a trip to a thrift shop, doll store or even a neighbor's garage is proof of Barbie's evolution over the years. I have a few older Barbies and dollar store Barbies myself. I am always appreciative of those who welcome the older girls into their doll families!

    1. Hello April, while I was researching my thrift store dolls, I wondered if Mattel keeps actual archives with every doll ever produced all over the world. It would be amazing to see those archives on different locations I think! All those different dolls with small differences depending on where they were produced!
      Hasbro did this apparently.
The older dolls are so pretty, it's fascinating to see how Barbie has changed over the years :-).
