Pilot Barbie (Mattel 1999)

Pilot Barbie is a doll I've been wanting to add to my collection for a long time.
Finally she's here :-).

The suitcase opens and has compartments for luggage.
Barbie has a passport in her hand.

This post has had* a "vintage dolls" tag. One can wonder when a doll is actually becoming vintage. Does she have to be at least 25 or 30 years old? Where do you draw the line? I decided for myself that I will label dolls as vintage when they are made before 2000. This may not be entirely correct but it's easier to classify them here on my blog. What is your opinion on when a doll is considered vintage?

*Update: I changed the tag in "pre 2000 dolls" :-).

  1. Hello :)
For me vintage dolls like Barbie come from the 50s, 60s and eventually 70s :)

  2. She's got great outfit, I like the details. And shoes. :) I'm not a collector, but I think vintage dolls are made before 80s. But I may be wrong, It's only my thinking. ;)

  4. Sorry, I'm not sure about how old it must be to be a vintage barbie doll. Anyway, I think she's a lovely barbie. I love her clothes and accessories as well as her hair and face. The plane is ideal. I have a modern one, from Toysrus.

  6. Beautiful doll with a very sweet face. I had te same but I sold her to make a place for the other ones.

Vintage dolls for me are all of 50's, 60's Barbie dolls ;maybe 70's ;) But if you like to have some of 80' or 90's dolls and describe it as a vintage is absolutely your decision :)

On the other hand, sometimes it is better to keep the description. Because there are alwas the people who sells dolls as antique or vintage, and even if they are broken they give a high price.

    Hugs :)

    1. Hello Urszula, thank you very much for your comment. You have a good point there! I will change the tag in "pre 2000 dolls", that will be better. I sometimes forget this is all very public information, and you are right about some sellers! Hugs back :-)

  7. This is really interesting. I've never seen that doll before! She is really lovely. I particularly love her haircut! And....my eye went directly to her roller bag and her cap!!!

  8. This doll is very elegant. I like her short hair and closed mouth.
I've read somewhere that things from 20 years ago are vintage and those from 40 years ago are retro. But I suppose the line between vintage and retro isn't really fixed.

    1. Hello Nana, glad you like her :-). I know that objects have to be at least 100 years old to be considered antique, but for vintage opinions seem to differ. It sounds plausible that 20 years old is vintage. Thank you for your comment!

    Pozdrawiam serdecznie :)

  10. although the pilot itself is an interesting
    alternativefor long-haired barbie - it's a young
lady with a headlineThis time she stole my whole
attention - amazingpalms, mindful manicure :)))

  12. Gosh Barbie changes so much year on year; she swings older/sexier, then younger/more innocent, like now. My first Barbies were very sexy with clicky bendy knees, twist and turn waist and very pneumatic bust! That's what I think of as vintage! Ha ha!

    1. Hello Jocelyn, it's incredible, the first Barbie looks so much older that she could be the mom of the recent play line Barbies :-). I too have played with the busty Barbies when I was a little girl, I was born in the 1960s. I still love the look of the old Barbies very much, but I like the new dolls as well. The Barbies I played with are definitely vintage for me too :-)!

  13. I often think in terms of modern, newer, older, retro and vintage. Do not know why, but it helps when I am searching for a specific doll.
This Barbie is beautiful! I like her!

    1. Hi Niina, that is a good way to divide doll ages. I keep finding it difficult, for example early Tonner dolls are not vintage, but just old (and lovely :-) ). Or Gene from Ashton Drake, it's the same, they are in a gray zone for me!
I'm glad you like this Barbie! I have a soft spot for dolls wearing uniforms :-).
